US President Donald Trump announced that the country's military budget for 2027 could reach $1.5 trillion. He wrote this on January 7 on the social media platform TruthSocial.
According to the White House chief, this decision was made after "long and difficult negotiations" with senators, members of Congress, heads of executive agencies, and other political representatives. Trump expressed confidence that the increased spending will enable the United States to create its "dream military" and ensure national security and defense.
The proposed amount significantly exceeds the $901 billion military budget for 2026, which was approved by Congress. The US President also stated that military spending would be increased through revenue from customs duties. He also expressed the belief that the United States would be able to continue reducing the national debt and pay dividends to moderate-income Americans.
However, increasing the military budget requires approval from the US Congress. According to Reuters, Republicans currently hold only a narrow majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The agency also notes that the US already spends more on defense than any other country in the world.
Donald Trump has previously expressed doubts about the loyalty of US NATO allies and emphasized the need to strengthen American military potential.
Meanwhile, the nonpartisan think tank Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget stated that implementing Trump's proposals would require approximately $5 trillion by 2035 and would increase the US national debt by $5.8 trillion. Experts believe that only about half of these costs could be covered by current tariffs.
According to Politico, the proposed sharp increase in the military budget is due to the high cost of several Trump administration initiatives. These include the Golden Dome air defense program and the Golden Fleet project, which envisions a large-scale modernization of the US Navy. These plans call for the creation of next-generation battleships with expanded technical capabilities.
The US defense budget bill for fiscal year 2026 was passed by Congress on December 17, 2025. The document provides for record defense spending of $901 billion, a 3.8% pay increase for military personnel, the purchase of military equipment, and measures to strengthen the US competitiveness against China and Russia.
