EU countries may consider sending troops to Greenland to counter potential US plans for the island, Politico reports, citing an unnamed EU diplomat.
He said European states should be prepared to deploy a military contingent to Greenland if Denmark so requests. Such a measure, it is noted, could be aimed at increasing the costs of a potential US military action. Politico emphasizes that such forces are unlikely to prevent a potential invasion, but could act as a deterrent.
Reuters previously reported that the US administration was discussing various options for acquiring Greenland, including scenarios involving the use of military force. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a phone call with the French Foreign Minister, stated that the United States was not planning to invade the island.
US President Donald Trump, following the military operation in Venezuela, expressed the opinion that Washington needs Greenland, citing its strategic importance to national security. The day before, the wife of White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller posted an image of a map of Greenland in the colors of the American flag on the social media site X, with the caption "Coming soon."
In response, Danish Ambassador to Washington Jesper Møller Sørensen recalled the allied relationship between Copenhagen and Washington and emphasized that Denmark expects full respect for the kingdom's territorial integrity. Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, commenting on the publication, stated that such images demonstrate disrespect, but expressed confidence that there is no cause for panic.
Former Danish Prime Minister Mute Egede previously stated that Greenland is not for sale. At the same time, Donald Trump refused to promise not to use military force to establish control over the island.
Until 1953, Greenland was a Danish colony. Currently, the island remains part of the Danish Kingdom, but since 2009, it has enjoyed the right to self-government and independent determination of domestic policy.
