In the Dangara District forestry enterprise, dried-out pistachio saplings have been restored across an area of 44 hectares. The work was carried out by State Forestry employees as part of the "Forestry Development Program for 2022–2026," according to the Forestry Agency under the Government of the Republic.
According to the source, pistachios occupy over 81,000 hectares of forestry land in Tajikistan. One of the program's goals is to restore and increase forest area and production, and to establish permanent seed production plots and plantations.
The Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, by its Resolution of March 31, 2022, approved the "Forestry Sector Development Program for 2022–2026" and an action plan for its implementation. The program's primary goals are to preserve biodiversity, restore and expand forest areas, improve the quality and quantity of ecosystem services, promote economic development, improve living standards, and supply the domestic market with forest products and export them.
As part of the program, Tajik scientists are conducting breeding and regionalization of new pistachio varieties. More than eight varieties of pistachios are grown in the Dangara, Bokhtar, Khuroson, Vahdat, and Varzob districts. Research results show that Tajik varieties are comparable in quality to those grown in Iran, Turkey, Syria, and the United States.
Scientists note that Tajikistan's climate and soil conditions allow it to meet domestic demand for seedlings and seeds of valuable pistachio varieties, as well as export them abroad. Widespread adoption of promising pistachio varieties and forms will increase yields to 8-10 quintals per hectare in the coming years.
