US claims to Greenland could lead to the collapse of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, according to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, according to the Associated Press.
According to the head of the Danish government, if the United States decides to use military force against another NATO member country, this will mean the end of the alliance's existence.
Greenland's Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen also warned of catastrophic consequences if the United States took any forceful action against Greenland.
As the Associated Press notes, the statements by the Danish and Greenlandic government leaders came shortly after the American operation in Venezuela, during which the country's President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were captured and taken to the United States, where they were charged with narco-terrorism.
US President Donald Trump previously stated that the island of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, is needed by the United States for defense purposes.
