How Interest in International Sports is Changing in Central Asia
Поделиться на FacebookОтправить по ТелеграмПоделиться ВконтактеПоделиться

Just ten years ago, international sports in Central Asia were a background phenomenon. Major tournaments were watched on TV at friends' houses or in cafes, the rare broadcasts were anticipated in advance, and discussions quickly petered out. Now the picture is different. Champions League matches, UFC fights, Formula 1 stages, and NBA games have become part of the average evening, like a TV series or a news feed.

Interest has grown gradually, not suddenly. Smartphones, fast internet, and streaming services have brought global sports closer. Many follow the results through apps, social media, and websites with schedules and statistics. For some audiences, 1xbet has become such a reference point, as an example of a sports site with news, odds, and additional activities that help keep abreast of the events.

Digital as the main accelerator

Perhaps the most noticeable shift relates to access to online content. In Kazakhstan, according to Internet Society Pulse, approximately 93 percent of the population used the internet in 2023. Similar trends are evident in neighboring countries, according to World Bank and ITU data. This means that broadcasts are no longer tied to cable TV or satellite.

Today, fans from Almaty or Tashkent can calmly watch a Premier League match on the go, catching highlights on social media and reading recaps just minutes after the final whistle. This format is changing the very way we consume sports. It's becoming shorter, more mobile, and more regular.

In this context, it's significant that major sports media services have entered the Central Asian market. For example, Setanta Sports broadcasts the UEFA Champions League, the English Premier League, the NBA, NHL, UFC, Formula 1, and ATP and WTA tournaments. For the region, this means consistent access to top leagues without complicated workarounds.

Stadiums are filling up again

Online broadcasting hasn't killed live stadiums. On the contrary, interest in global sports has encouraged people to attend matches at home. This is clearly demonstrated by football. In the Kazakhstan Premier League, average attendance increased from 4,323 spectators in the 2024 season to 5,011 in 2025. Over 900,000 people attended the stadiums during the season.

In Uzbekistan, the figures are even more striking. Some clubs, such as Neftchi Fergana, had average attendances in 2025 exceeding 12,000 spectators. For regional football, this is a significant figure and a clear sign of interest.

Growth is also noticeable in Kyrgyzstan. Average attendance at national league matches has increased from approximately 510 spectators in the 2023–24 season to approximately 966 in the 2024–25 season. While the numbers are still modest, the trend is clear.

In short, live sports have once again become part of urban leisure:

  • an evening match as a reason to leave the house;
  • family trips to the stadium on weekends;
  • Local derbies that are discussed on social media and instant messengers.

International events come to the region

Another important factor is the growing number of major tournaments directly in Central Asia. Kazakhstan has officially announced plans to host over 40 international sporting events in 2025. This includes not only competitions but also infrastructure, volunteers, tourists, and media.

The World Nomad Games, held in Astana in 2024, deserve special attention. Thousands of athletes from over 100 countries participated. Organizers expected over 100,000 foreign guests. Such events change the perception of sport as something local, becoming part of the global calendar.

For the spectator, it's a simple experience. You see people with accreditation on the streets, hear different languages, read reports from global media about your city. Sport ceases to be abstract.

Youth formats and new heroes

Interest in international sports in the region is largely driven by young spectators. Two trends stand out in particular.

First is esports. According to Esports Charts, the audience for esports broadcasts in Central Asia is steadily growing. Tournaments are watched online, discussed in chats, and highlights are rewatched. For many, this is their first entry point into sports culture.

The second is martial arts. MMA fights and UFC tournaments attract millions of views. The appearance of fighters from Uzbekistan and other countries in the region in major promotions immediately attracts a new audience. In a significant symbolic moment, MMA has been included in the Asian Games program, scheduled to debut in 2026. This official status increases interest.

These formats have several common features:

  • short and bright moments, convenient for social networks;
  • clear plot and personal stories of athletes;
  • a feeling of personal involvement when they root for their own.

Different countries, common vector

Although Central Asia is often viewed as a single region, there are distinct differences within it. Kazakhstan stands out for its advanced digital infrastructure and active involvement in international events. Uzbekistan is focusing on mass participation and keen interest in stadiums. Kyrgyzstan is gradually expanding its infrastructure and discussing projects for large arenas, including a 51,000-seat stadium.

Tajikistan and Turkmenistan are less frequently included in international reports, but even there, interest is measured through indirect indicators. Internet penetration, athletes' participation in continental tournaments, and the emergence of broadcasts of world leagues all contribute to the overall picture.

What does an ordinary fan feel?

Beyond the statistics, changes are noticeable on a more everyday level. Cafes increasingly tune in to not only local matches but also European leagues. Rosters and player injuries are discussed in chats. Teenagers argue about who is stronger in the octagon or on the map in eSports.

International sport is no longer a rare event. It has become a part of everyday life in the region. Today, Central Asia is not just watching from the sidelines. It is participating, hosting, discussing, and gradually taking its place on the global sports agenda.
