A large chunk of ice broke off from a glacier on Mount Ismoili Somoni in Tajikistan's Tajikabad district. The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. near the village of Safedobi, according to Tajikistan's Emergency Situations Committee.
According to the Emergency Situations Committee, the broken-off section of the glacier slid down the gorge, and by 2:00 p.m. the situation had been completely stabilized.
The dimensions of the broken off part are approximately 2 kilometers in length, 25 meters in height and 150–200 meters in width.
According to preliminary information, there are no casualties or significant damage. However, experts warn that heavy rains and possible further glacial calving could threaten agriculture in the village of Gulrez.
Local authorities and rescue services continue to monitor the situation and are prepared to respond promptly to the possible consequences of further landslides.
