The 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced.
The writer was recognized for his "compelling and visionary work, which, in the midst of apocalyptic horror, reaffirms the power of art." Krasznahorkai is known for his profound philosophical novels, which explore human suffering, social and historical catastrophes, and moral and existential dilemmas.
Previously, writers from various countries have won the Nobel Prize in Literature. In 2024, the prize was awarded to South Korean writer Han Kang for "intense poetic prose that confronts historical trauma and exposes the fragility of human life." In 2023, the award was given to Norwegian writer Jon Foss "for innovative plays and prose that give voice to the ineffable." In 2022, French writer Annie Ernaux was recognized for "her courage in depicting shame, humiliation, jealousy, and the search for the true self, as well as for the simplicity and clarity of her language." In 2021, the laureate was Tanzanian writer Abdulrazak Gurna.
The Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded annually since 1901, with the exception of 1914 and 1940–1943, when no ceremonies were held due to military action.
In addition to the literature prize, the 2025 Nobel Prize laureates in other categories have already been announced. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Susumu Kitagawa (Japan), Richard Robson (Australia), and Omar Yaghi (USA) "for their development of metal-organic frameworks." The Nobel Prize in Physics was shared by John Clark, Michel Devore, and John Martinis "for their discovery of macroscopic quantum-mechanical tunneling and energy quantization in an electric circuit." In the "Medicine and Physiology" category, American scientists Mary Brunkow and Fred Ramsdell, as well as Japanese scientist Simon Sakaguchi, were awarded "for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance."
The awards ceremony will take place on December 10, 2025, in Stockholm. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate will be announced on October 10.
