The European Union plans to create a special donor group to provide aid to Palestine and rebuild the Gaza Strip's infrastructure. This was announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Question, currently underway in New York, Interfax reports.
"Because the very survival of the Palestinian Authority is at stake, we must all do more. That's why we will establish a donor group for Palestine. Any future Palestinian state must be viable and economically sustainable," von der Leyen emphasized.
According to her, since the beginning of military operations in the Gaza Strip, the European Union has already provided the Palestinian National Authority with 1.6 billion euros in aid, but the current amounts are not enough.
"We, Europeans, will create a special instrument for the reconstruction of Gaza, coordinating our efforts with other international donors. Gaza must be restored, and the Palestinian economy must be revived. I invite everyone to join this effort," the EC President noted.
The European Union has previously actively supported the Palestinian National Authority through humanitarian programs, including food supplies, medical aid, and the restoration of social infrastructure. This new initiative aims to expand international cooperation and attract additional resources to stabilize the situation in the region.
Experts believe that the creation of a donor coordination group could accelerate the reconstruction of Gaza and facilitate the implementation of the two-state solution based on a peaceful settlement of the conflict.
