US President Donald Trump expressed disappointment in Russian leader Vladimir Putin amid the breakdown of peace talks in Ukraine. The statement was made on Thursday, September 18, during Trump's visit to the UK.
The American leader noted that he had initially hoped for a quick resolution to the conflict thanks to his personal relationship with Putin. "People are dying, and I feel obligated to resolve it precisely because of that. I'm proud that we resolved seven wars that seemed intractable. But what I thought would be the easiest was the relationship with Putin. He's disappointed me," Trump said at a press conference at the British Prime Minister's residence.
According to the US President, negotiations with Moscow have reached a dead end. Trump emphasized that he had hoped to end the war in Ukraine as quickly as possible, but his ultimatums and appeals to Putin had yielded no results. He also noted that the meeting with the Russian leader in Alaska in August was not a mistake, although it had raised concerns among allies about a possible rapprochement with the Kremlin.
The American president called on Western allies to stop purchasing Russian oil in order to put pressure on Moscow and encourage it to negotiate, but has not yet announced any unilateral measures of his own against Russia.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who attended the press conference, emphasized the need to increase pressure on Putin to extract even minimal concessions. "We discussed how to decisively increase the pressure on Putin. Only when pressure is applied does he show any willingness to make concessions," Starmer noted.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported new massive Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory. In response, Kyiv used long-range drones, striking targets deep within Russia, including oil refineries, terminals, and warehouses.
