The first military aid packages to Ukraine under a new initiative by the United States and its allies will include missiles for the Patriot air defense system and the HIMARS multiple launch rocket system. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this at a joint press conference with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola in Kyiv.
According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine has already received over $2 billion from partners under the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program, and by October, the aid amount will reach approximately $3–3.5 billion. The first two American-produced military aid packages are valued at $500 million each.
The PURL program provides funding for American weapons to Ukraine's allies based on a list of priority needs compiled by Kyiv. This new initiative marks the first use of the PURL mechanism and is aimed at strengthening Ukraine's defense capability.
Earlier, Reuters reported that the US presidential administration had approved the first two aid packages, which could be sent soon. In August, it was also reported that Ukraine had offered the US a $100 billion deal in exchange for security guarantees financed by European countries.
