In Kazakhstan's Turkestan region, police officers shut down a major illegal migration channel through which foreigners could enter the country, bypassing border checkpoints, for 500,000 tenge per person, the Kazakh Ministry of Internal Affairs press service reported.
According to the agency, four organizers of the scheme and their accomplices, who assisted citizens of neighboring countries in illegally crossing the state border, were arrested on September 11. During searches, foreign passports, forged documents, electronic media, and communication devices were seized from the suspects.
A pre-trial investigation has been launched against the detainees under the articles “Organization of illegal migration” and “Intentional illegal crossing of the state border.”
Earlier, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized in his Address to the Nation that uncontrolled external and internal migration is placing a significant strain on the infrastructure of the country's largest cities.
