The Trump administration has approved new arms deliveries to Ukraine under a revamped funding mechanism involving NATO allies. Reuters reported this on Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the process.
According to the agency, the two military aid packages are worth $500 million each. Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby approved the shipment. The supplies will be financed by NATO countries, a key demand of the US president.
The new agreement is being implemented through a special mechanism called the "Priority Ukraine Requirements List" (PURL). This mechanism was developed by the United States and its allies to expedite the transfer of weapons from American arsenals to Kyiv, subject to funding from alliance partners.
Earlier, in August, the Financial Times reported that Kyiv offered the US a $100 billion deal in exchange for security guarantees. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's initiative, in exchange for Washington's security guarantees, Kyiv would commit to purchasing $100 billion worth of weapons from the US, with the financing of the deal to be provided by its European allies.
Thus, the current deliveries will be the first practical step in implementing a new mechanism of military support for Ukraine from the United States and its allies.
