The UN International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, has recognized Israel's actions in the region as genocide, according to the commission's official report.
Experts believe that senior Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, incited violence against the Palestinian population in Gaza. Meanwhile, Israeli President Isaac Herzog, former Defense Minister Yoav Galant, and other high-ranking officials have not been punished for their actions.
"The commission concluded that the Israeli authorities incited genocide and failed to take the necessary measures to bring those responsible to justice," the press release stated. The experts emphasized that their analysis does not cover all public statements by Israeli politicians, but is based on a systematic examination of the authorities' actions and their consequences.
Commission Chairperson Navi Pillay stated that the international community cannot remain indifferent to what is happening in Gaza. "Inaction in the face of genocide is complicity," she emphasized.
The UN Commission on Palestine was established by the Human Rights Council in 2021 to investigate violations of international humanitarian law and human rights preceding the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. The commission's mandate was later expanded to include an analysis of the causes of regional instability and the duration of the conflict.
The UN commission's report has sparked widespread international outcry. Experts emphasize that recognizing Israel's actions in Gaza as genocide lays the groundwork for further international investigations and the potential prosecution of those responsible.
