The United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution "Cooperation between the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization" with 120 votes in favor, Interfax reports, citing the SCO press service.
"The draft document was developed by the People's Republic of China, which holds the SCO Presidency in 2024-2025. The resolution was co-sponsored by 37 states, including all SCO member states," the statement said.
The resolution notes that the SCO has become the most important regional organization for addressing regional security in all its aspects. It emphasizes the SCO's constructive role in ensuring peace and sustainable development, promoting regional cooperation, and strengthening good-neighborly relations and mutual trust.
The SCO's efforts to develop cooperation with other international and regional organizations were recognized, and the importance of strengthening dialogue, cooperation, and coordination between the UN system and the SCO was noted.
Since December 2, 2004, the SCO has had observer status at the UN General Assembly.
