The US State Department has approved the potential sale of up to $825 million in air-to-air munitions and equipment to Ukraine, including 3,350 Extended Range Attack Munition (ERAM) missiles. This was announced by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), a Pentagon agency.
According to the agency, DSCA has already issued all necessary certificates and notified the US Congress of the potential deal. In addition to the missiles themselves, Ukraine has requested 3,350 GPS/INS navigation systems with anti-spoofing capabilities, spare parts, training systems, and software.
Financing is expected to come from Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway, as well as the US Foreign Military Financing program. Zone 5 Technologies and CoAspire have been appointed as the prime contractors.
ERAM missiles are air-to-surface missiles. They were developed as a versatile and relatively inexpensive means of engaging targets at long ranges. Thanks to their modular design, ERAM can be used against both land and sea targets. Their strike range is up to 400 km.
The Wall Street Journal recalls that in 2023, the Biden administration approved the transfer of ATACMS missiles to Ukraine, and restrictions on their use in strikes against Russia were lifted in the fall of 2024. However, according to the newspaper's sources, Kyiv's stockpiles are now nearly depleted.
The ERAM initiative was launched under the Biden administration as a project to provide mass and affordable weapons to the Ukrainian Air Force.
