The man detained in Moscow after an armed attack on police officers is not a citizen of Tajikistan, the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan reported on Wednesday.
On August 27, reports and a video of an incident on Shelkovskoye Highway in Moscow circulated on social media. A man armed with a knife resisted police officers. Several posts claimed he was a citizen of Tajikistan.
"It has been established that the detainee is Sherafgan Mumindzhonovich Kundzhumov, born in 1999, a native of the Saratov region, a citizen of the Russian Federation," the Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement.
According to the agency, Kundzhumov had previously faced criminal charges in Russia. In 2017, he was convicted by the Federal Security Service for terrorist offenses and sentenced to seven years in prison. He served his sentence in Penal Colony No. 6 in Klintsy, Bryansk Oblast, and was released in May 2025.
The Tajik Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasized that no Tajik passports were issued to Sh. M. Kunjumov. "He never held Tajik citizenship," the press service clarified.
The reports also noted that the detainee had previously attacked police officers and attempted to use an incendiary mixture known as a Molotov cocktail.
The Tajik Ministry of Internal Affairs called on media outlets and social media users to refrain from disseminating unverified information.
