On Monday, August 25, a man attempted to set himself on fire in Terminal T1 of Almaty International Airport, according to the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan.
The incident occurred at 10:06 PM near the airport ticket counter. Police officers, along with airport security personnel, immediately responded, extinguishing the flames and calling an ambulance. The victim was taken to City Clinical Hospital No. 4 and admitted to the intensive care unit. According to medical personnel, his condition is extremely serious. He is receiving full treatment in accordance with the clinical protocols of the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan.
The Transport Police Department has opened a criminal investigation into the incident. Investigative actions are currently underway to establish the full causes and circumstances of the incident.
According to preliminary information, the motive for setting himself on fire could have been a personal conflict with his common-law wife, the department clarified.
Video of the incident later surfaced online. It shows a man wearing a baseball cap and jacket standing near the cash register before a fire breaks out and he falls to the floor. The flames were quickly extinguished by fire extinguishers on hand.
Earlier, on March 7, another high-profile incident occurred at Almaty Airport: a man armed with a knife took an airport employee hostage. The attacker was subdued and sentenced to 11 years in prison.
