US President Donald Trump confirmed that two American nuclear submarines are moving towards Russia, Interfax reports.
"They're closer to Russia. Yes, they're closer to Russia," Trump said in an interview with NEWSMAX when asked whether the submarines had approached Russian territory.
At a meeting with presidential journalists, he explained that he ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines following statements by Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, as he sought to protect the Americans.
"We just have to be careful. We were threatened, and we decided that these threats were wrong, and therefore we need to be careful," the president told reporters.
Trump previously stated that he would deploy nuclear submarines "in appropriate regions" in response to Medvedev's comments on social media.
"Based on the highly provocative statements made by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, (…) I have ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines in the relevant regions, just in case these absurd and inflammatory statements are more than just words," Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social on Friday.
