A group of US Democratic senators have released a message from the Donald Trump administration calling for pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reach a ceasefire agreement with Hamas, Interfax reports.
"We call on the Trump administration to use its considerable leverage against Prime Minister Netanyahu," the message said.
In particular, the senators believe that Netanyahu should achieve a ceasefire agreement with Hamas that will allow "the release of the hostages as soon as possible."
They demand that Netanyahu ensure increased humanitarian aid, robust mechanisms for its effective distribution under the control of international organizations, close the Gaza Humanitarian Fund, and restore support for existing UN-led aid coordination mechanisms in Gaza.
The senators believe that it is necessary to develop a post-war plan for the construction of Gaza, according to which Hamas will not retain power, Israel will abandon the annexation of the West Bank and continue to integrate into the region, and a reformed Palestinian Authority will be endowed with appropriate powers.
The letter was signed by Senators Jack Reed, Dick Durbin, Jeanne Shaheen, Mark Warner, Chris Coons and Brian Schatz.
