One person died and three were seriously injured as a result of a collapse of soil during excavation work in the city of Istaravshan in the Sughd region. This was reported by the Office of the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan in the Sughd region.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of July 23, when four local residents were digging a ditch. A sudden collapse of a large volume of earth resulted in everyone in the trench being buried under rubble.
"As a result of the collapse, one person died on the spot. Three more with injuries of varying severity were quickly taken to the Istaravshan city hospital," the department clarified.
The deceased was a 31-year-old resident of the Navoi mahalla. The victims were his fellow countrymen: two 31-year-old men and one 21-year-old young man, living on Tursunzade Street in the same mahalla.
The Istaravshan Emergency Situations Committee staff were immediately dispatched to the scene of the incident, where they, together with local residents, carried out rescue operations and pulled the victims out from under the rubble.
According to preliminary data, the cause of the tragedy was a gross violation of safety regulations during excavation work. Experts continue to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
