Tajikistan ranked 47th out of 163 countries in the Global Peace Index 2026, placing it among the 50 most peaceful and safe countries on the planet. These data are presented in the annual report of the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).
According to the study, Tajikistan's Peace Index score was 1.799 , placing it 47th in the global ranking. In terms of peacefulness, the country outperformed several countries in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America, including Kuwait, Armenia, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Costa Rica, and others.
In the regional ranking of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Tajikistan ranked fifth , behind only Bulgaria, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Romania. However, the country ranked above Armenia, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Belarus.
The report's authors note that Eastern Europe and Central Asia were the only region to show an improvement in peacefulness indicators by the end of the year. While seven out of eight regions experienced a deterioration in security, Central Asian countries generally maintained relatively stable positions.
The Global Peace Index is considered one of the most authoritative international studies on security and stability. The ranking is based on 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators that assess the level of public safety, the presence of internal and external conflicts, and the degree of militarization of the state. The study covers 163 countries and territories, accounting for 99.7 percent of the world's population.
Iceland once again topped the 2026 ranking. The top ten most peaceful countries also included New Zealand, Switzerland, Slovenia, Ireland, Austria, Portugal, Singapore, Finland, and Japan.
Despite the fact that the overall level of peace in the world has continued to decline for the twelfth year in a row amid armed conflicts and rising geopolitical tensions, Tajikistan maintains a stable position in the top third of the global ranking, remaining one of the safest countries in Central Asia.
