On the sidelines of the 8th Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), held from May 30 to June 6, 2026, in Samarkand, the Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Bakhodur Sheralizoda, held a series of bilateral meetings with the heads of international environmental organizations and representatives of government agencies.
In particular, negotiations were held with the Vice President of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Chairperson of the Environmental Protection Agency Shina Ansari, the Special Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues Mukhtar Babayev, the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Inger Andersen, the Deputy Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Godfrey Magwenzi, the Executive Secretary of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions Dr. Rolf Payet, as well as the Chairman of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution Julio Cordano.


During the meetings, the parties discussed expanding multilateral cooperation in environmental protection and climate change. Particular attention was paid to attracting technical and financial support, ensuring sustainable management of chemicals and hazardous waste, combating plastic pollution, increasing climate finance, and implementing joint environmental, adaptation, and low-carbon projects.
In addition, the negotiators discussed prospects for further cooperation on the implementation of international environmental conventions, strengthening institutional capacity, improving environmental management systems, preserving biodiversity, adapting to climate change, and promoting Tajikistan's global initiatives in the field of glacier conservation and preservation, as well as climate projects.
As noted during the meetings, mobilizing best practices, resources, and new partnerships will contribute to the implementation of national environmental and climate priorities, the achievement of sustainable development goals, and the promotion of Tajikistan's green agenda internationally.
