Every nation has historical figures whose vision, determination, and leadership shape the destiny of generations. For Azerbaijan, such a statesman is Heydar Aliyev — the founder of the modern Azerbaijani state, an outstanding political leader, and a personality whose legacy continues to influence the country's development and international standing.

Each year on May 10, the people of Azerbaijan respectfully commemorate the birth anniversary of Heydar Aliyev, honoring his invaluable contributions to the preservation of national independence, state-building, economic progress, and the strengthening of Azerbaijani identity. His life and political career represent a remarkable example of patriotism, strategic thinking, and unwavering devotion to the nation.

Early Life and Formation of a Statesman

Heydar Aliyev was born on May 10, 1923, in the ancient Azerbaijani city of Nakhchivan. From an early age, he demonstrated exceptional intelligence, discipline, and leadership qualities. In 1939, after advancing from Nakhchivan Pedagogical School he entered Azerbaijan Industrial Institute (present Azerbaijan State Oil and Industrial University), Faculty of Architecture, but the outbreak of the World War II prevented him from completing his education. In 1957, he graduated from Azerbaijan State University (presently Baku State University), Faculty of History.

Through hard work and remarkable organizational skills, Heydar Aliyev rose to prominent positions within the Soviet administrative system. His professionalism, strategic mindset, and ability to manage complex political processes quickly distinguished him as one of the most influential leaders of his era.

Leadership During the Soviet Period

In 1969, Heydar Aliyev became the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Soviet Azerbaijan. This period marked a turning point in the republic's socio-economic and cultural development.

Under his leadership, Azerbaijan experienced significant industrial growth, modernization of infrastructure, expansion of educational institutions, and rapid development in science and culture. Thousands of Azerbaijani youth were sent to leading universities and military academies across the Soviet Union, laying the foundation for a future generation of highly qualified professionals.

Heydar Aliyev paid special attention to the preservation of Azerbaijani language, culture, and national values during a period when maintaining national identity within the Soviet system was a serious challenge. His efforts played a critical role in strengthening national consciousness among Azerbaijanis.

Return to Power and the Salvation of Azerbaijan

The collapse of the Soviet Union brought severe political and economic instability to many newly independent states, including Azerbaijan. In the early 1990s, the country faced internal political turmoil, economic crisis, and military aggression connected to the First Nagorno-Garabakh War.

At this critical moment in history, the Azerbaijani people turned to Heydar Aliyev for leadership. In 1993, he returned to power at the insistence of the people and was elected President of Azerbaijan.

His return is widely regarded as the beginning of national stabilization and state consolidation. Through decisive political steps, Heydar Aliyev succeeded in preventing civil conflict, restoring public order, strengthening state institutions, and preserving Azerbaijan's independence.

For these historic achievements, the Azerbaijani people respectfully refer to him as the “National Leader.”

State-Building and Democratic Development

One of Heydar Aliyev's greatest achievements was the establishment of strong state institutions and the creation of a sustainable governance system in Azerbaijan.

During his presidency in 1995 was adopted a new Constitution, launched fundamental democratic reforms, restored political and economic stability, strengthened legal and judicial institutions and expanded international cooperation significantly.

Heydar Aliyev pursued a balanced foreign policy based on national interests, enabling Azerbaijan to establish constructive relations with both regional and global powers. His diplomatic strategy laid the groundwork for Azerbaijan's growing role in international affairs.

The “Contract of the Century” and Economic Transformation

Among the most significant milestones of Heydar Aliyev's presidency was the signing of the historic oil agreement known as the Contract of the Century in 1994.

This agreement landmark attracted major international investment to Azerbaijan's energy sector and transformed the country into a key player in the global energy market. It also opened the way for large-scale infrastructure projects, including major oil and gas export pipelines connecting the Caspian region with international markets.

The economic strategy initiated by Heydar Aliyev created the foundation for long-term development, modernization, and improved living standards for the Azerbaijani people.

National Identity and Cultural Heritage

Heydar Aliyev devoted enormous attention to the promotion of Azerbaijani culture, language, literature, and historical heritage. He believed that a strong national identity was essential for the survival and progress of an independent state.

During his leadership, important initiatives were implemented to preserve cultural monuments, support artists and intellectuals, and promote Azerbaijani culture worldwide.

Heydar Aliyev has repeatedly emphasized the importance of patriotism, education, and moral values in building a strong society. His speeches and political philosophy continue to inspire generations of Azerbaijanis today.

Legacy and Continuity

Heydar Aliyev passed away on December 12, 2003, yet his political legacy remains deeply embedded in the modern development of Azerbaijan.Today, Azerbaijan continues along the strategic path established by the National Leader under the leadership of Ilham Aliyev. The country's economic modernization, infrastructure development, international influence, and restoration of territorial integrity are widely viewed as the continuation of the statehood strategy founded by Heydar Aliyev.

The memory of the National Leader is honored not only in Azerbaijan but also internationally through monuments, cultural centers, educational institutions, and commemorative events dedicated to his life and achievements.

A Leader Remembered by History

The life of Heydar Aliyev represents far more than the biography of a political leader. It is the story of a man who devoted his life to the service of his nation during some of the most difficult and decisive periods of its history.

His vision transformed Azerbaijan from a republic facing instability into a confident, independent state with a clear national strategy and growing international authority.

On the anniversary of his birth, the people of Azerbaijan remember Heydar Aliyev with profound respect and gratitude. His ideas, policies, and devotion to the nation continue to guide Azerbaijan toward further progress and prosperity.

The name of Heydar Aliyev remains inseparable from the modern history of Azerbaijan – a symbol of strong leadership, national unity, and enduring statehood.
