UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran and called on both sides to respect international law and the terms of the ceasefire, according to a statement from the UN Secretary-General's spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric.
"The Secretary-General welcomes the announcement of a two-week ceasefire by the United States and Iran. He calls on all parties to the current conflict in the Middle East to fulfill their obligations under international law and to adhere to the ceasefire in order to pave the way for a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region," the statement reads.
The statement also noted that a cessation of hostilities is urgently needed to protect civilians.
Guterres also expressed gratitude to Pakistan and other mediators for their assistance in establishing a ceasefire.
