Iran accused the United States of violating the ceasefire following the seizure of an Islamic Republic-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman. A spokesman for the country's armed forces, Hazrat Khatam al-Anbiya, made the statement on the night of Monday, April 20.
According to the Iranian side, the actions of the American military were considered an "act of maritime piracy" and a violation of the previously reached ceasefire. The statement was distributed through the state news agency Tasnim.
Tehran also reported that drone strikes were carried out on American warships in response to the incident.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced on his social media account, TruthSocial, that the US Navy fired on and seized an Iranian cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman. He claimed the ship was attempting to circumvent Washington's naval blockade of the Islamic Republic's ports.
The seizure of the vessel was also confirmed by the US Central Command in the Middle East (CENTCOM).
Amid the new escalation between Tehran and Washington, the prospects for the next round of negotiations remain uncertain. Donald Trump previously announced their holding.
According to the Tasnim news agency, Iranian authorities do not intend to participate in negotiations with the United States as long as the American blockade of the country's ports in the Strait of Hormuz remains in place.
