Chisinau has begun the process of denunciating the three fundamental agreements that underlie the Republic of Moldova's membership in the Commonwealth of Independent States. This was announced on Radio Moldova by Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi on Monday, January 19.
According to him, this concerns Moldova's legal withdrawal from the CIS. The minister emphasized that the republic's de facto membership in the Commonwealth had been suspended for some time, and after the termination of these agreements, Moldova will officially and legally cease to be a member of the CIS.
Mihai Popšoi clarified that the denunciation process concerns the CIS Charter, signed in Minsk on January 22, 1993, the Agreement on the Establishment of the CIS of December 8, 1991, and the Appendix to that agreement of December 22, 1991. According to him, the relevant procedures have already begun, and parliament members will review these documents at the very beginning of the new parliamentary session.
"We will likely complete the government procedures by mid-February, after which the decision will be made by parliament," the state news agency Moldpress quotes the Moldovan Foreign Minister as saying.
The head of the Foreign Ministry called the termination of Moldova's membership agreements in the CIS an important step in strengthening the country's European orientation.
Mihai Popșoi also reported that the Republic of Moldova has signed a total of 283 agreements with the CIS. Of these, 71 have already been denounced, and approximately 60 more are in the process of being denounced. At the same time, he stated that Chisinau does not intend to abandon agreements that bring economic benefits or are of practical importance to citizens, as long as they do not conflict with the country's European course.
