Uzbek midfielder Maradona Safarov will continue his career with Tajik football club Istaravshan, Fergana.ru reported, citing the club's press service on Instagram.
Safarov played for OshMU in the Kyrgyz Championship for the past three seasons. He served as team captain for a time, and last season he became the club's leading assist provider, tallying seven assists in 25 matches. The team finished a record-breaking sixth in the national league.
Istaravshan's head coach is Sherali Bobokulov, former coach of the Uzbekistan women's national team, who saved the team from relegation last season. The club traditionally features a large number of Uzbek players, due to Istaravshan's geographical proximity to the neighboring country.
Last season, eight Uzbek players played for Istaravshan, and the team currently has five Uzbek players on its roster. Additional signings are reportedly possible.
It is noted that the name Maradona was given to the footballer by his father, who is a fan of the great Argentine player Diego Maradona.
