The situation of Tajik citizens serving sentences in Iraqi prisons, as well as possible avenues for their return to their homeland, became a key topic of discussion between the Tajik delegation and Iraqi authorities.
The Tajik delegation was led by Secretary of the Security Council Yusuf Rahmon. The visit took place at the invitation of Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Arachi.
During the visit, the Tajik delegation met with Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid and the National Security Advisor. The talks focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in political, legal, and security matters, as well as the joint fight against terrorism, extremism, and their financing.
The parties exchanged views on practical steps to repatriate convicted Tajik citizens, creating conditions to protect their rights, and ensuring compliance with the laws of both countries. Particular attention was paid to legal support and coordination between competent authorities to ensure the safe and legal return of citizens.
During the talks, mechanisms for further cooperation between Tajikistan and Iraq in the area of security, the exchange of information on terrorist and extremist activities, the prevention of threats, and strengthening stability in the region were also discussed.
Following the meetings, the parties expressed interest in continuing dialogue and developing bilateral cooperation at all levels, emphasizing the importance of working together to ensure the rights and legitimate interests of citizens, as well as strengthening security and stability.
