The 37th meeting of the Intergovernmental Council on Agro-Industrial Complex of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was held in Dushanbe. During the meeting, Tajikistan's Minister of Agriculture, Qurbon Hakimzoda, was elected Chairman of the Council for 2025–2026, the ministry's press service reported.
The meeting participants discussed a wide range of issues related to food security, sustainable development of the agricultural sector, strengthening regional self-sufficiency, and reducing dependence on external factors. Particular attention was paid to pest prevention, crop protection, and ensuring stability in the agricultural sector.
"The main goal of the meeting is to strengthen cooperation among CIS member states in the field of agriculture, ensure food security, and promote the sustainable development of the agro-industrial complex," noted Kurbon Hakimzoda, emphasizing Tajikistan's role in ensuring food security for the country and the region.
Belarusian Minister of Agriculture and Food Yuri Gorlov highlighted the global challenges associated with the growing consumption of artificial foods. He emphasized that Belarus exports approximately 80% of its agricultural products to CIS markets and intends to actively participate in strengthening the region's food security.
Kazakhstan's Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Yermek Kenzhekhanuly, noted the need to implement modern technologies and equipment to increase the production of environmentally friendly products. "Modern technologies allow us to perform agricultural work in a timely manner and with high quality," he said.
The meeting also reviewed the 2026 action plan, a draft new version of the 1993 Agreement on Interstate Relations on Agro-Industrial Complex Issues, and a food security cooperation program. Participants discussed the implementation of a set of measures to prevent the spread of locusts by 2026, as well as current trends in sheep farming and Tajikistan's experience in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
It was decided to hold the next meeting of the Intergovernmental Council in 2026 in the Republic of Uzbekistan.
