Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev launched the second line of the Dostyk-Moiynty railway, Fergana.ru reports, citing Akorda's press service.
This railway connects Kazakhstan with Alashankou, China. At the opening ceremony, Tokayev stated that thanks to the hard work of Kazakhstani workers, who "labored tirelessly day and night for almost three years," the railway was launched ahead of schedule. Thanks to this project, freight traffic volumes will increase fivefold.
"Delivery times for export goods will be reduced, and transit potential will be strengthened," Tokayev noted.
Once the second line opens, the entire route's capacity will increase from 12 to 60 pairs of trains per day, and container traffic speeds will increase to 1,500 km per day. "The commissioning of the new lines will help maintain Kazakhstan's dominant position in rail transit traffic between China and Europe," Presidential Aide Ruslan Zheldibay wrote on his Telegram channel.
In total, Kazakhstan plans to build over 1,700 km of new railways by 2027. Construction of a highway bypassing Almaty, designed to expedite freight transit from China, is also expected to be completed this year.
