The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Venezuelan politician María Corina Machado , the leader of the opposition movement and one of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro's main rivals. The announcement was made during a live broadcast from the Nobel Institute in Oslo.
The Nobel Committee's statement noted that Machado was awarded the prize for "her tireless work to advance democratic rights in Venezuela and her struggle for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy."
The prize will amount to 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately 1.2 million US dollars ).
Who is Maria Corina Machado?
María Corina Machado was born on October 7, 1967, in Caracas . From 2011 to 2014, she served as a member of the National Assembly of Venezuela. In 2011, she ran for president.
Machado's political activities have brought her international recognition. In 2018, she was named one of the BBC's 100 most influential women in the world , and in 2025, Time magazine named her one of the world's top 100 most influential people .
As a representative of the Nobel Committee noted, over the years of her political career, Machado repeatedly faced pressure and threats from the authorities, participated in large-scale protest movements, and remained a symbol of peaceful resistance in Venezuela.
She was nominated for the award by the Inspira América Foundation, which supported Machado's efforts to promote peace, human rights, and democratic values.
"Last year, Ms. Machado was forced into hiding. Despite serious threats to her life, she remained in the country. This choice inspired millions of people. She rallied the opposition, never wavered in her resistance to the militarization of Venezuelan society, and steadfastly advocated for a peaceful transition to democracy," reads a statement on the Nobel Committee's official website.
Trump was left without a bonus
Former US President Donald Trump was also among the nominees for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. The politician himself made no secret of his ambitions, stating that "it would be an insult to the United States" if he did not win the prize.
However, the Nobel Committee gave preference to Machado, highlighting her "contribution to the protection of human rights and democratic freedoms in one of the most politically tense regions of the world."
The Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony will take place on December 10, 2025 , in Oslo , as traditionally happens every year on the memorial day of the prize's founder, Alfred Nobel.
