In the first half of 2025, 1906 tons of fish were grown in fish farms in Tajikistan, which is 233 tons more than in the same period last year. This was reported by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Tajikistan at a press conference held in Dushanbe.
As specified by the department, the active development of the industry is ensured by the use of 1,300 natural lakes, eight reservoirs and 385 specialized fish farms. The total area of water bodies involved in fish farming is 75,968.4 hectares, of which more than 73 thousand hectares are reservoirs, and over 2,600 hectares are pond farms.
Fish farming activities are carried out within the framework of the implementation of the “Comprehensive Program for the Development of Livestock, Poultry, Fishing and Beekeeping in the Republic of Tajikistan for 2023–2027”, aimed at ensuring food security and increasing the share of domestic production in agriculture.
According to the ministry, there are over 60 species of fish in the country's waters, including both commercial and ornamental species. The program provides for expanding the range of aquacultures and improving conditions for increasing production volumes.
It is noted that fishing remains one of the promising areas in the country's agricultural sector with high growth potential.
