The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced the appointment of Lea Gutierrez as Director General of the Central and West Asia Department, effective today.
In her new role, Gutierrez will oversee ADB’s work in eleven countries in the region: Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The new leader will focus on implementing the bank’s strategic agenda, which focuses on inclusive economic growth, regional cooperation, and sustainable development.
“I am honoured to take up this position. I look forward to continuing to work with developing member countries and all stakeholders to advance inclusive growth and sustainable development across the region,” said Ms. Gutierrez.
Leah Gutierrez has more than four decades of professional experience, including 25 years with ADB. Prior to her new appointment, she headed the Sector Department, responsible for operations in finance, human and social development, and public administration. Previously, she also headed the Pacific Department and held senior positions in other departments of the bank.
A Filipino national, she holds a PhD and MA in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania in the United States and a BA in Economics from the University of the Philippines.
