On July 25, 2025, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a historic resolution entitled “The Role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Creating New Opportunities for Sustainable Development in Central Asia,” initiated by the Republic of Tajikistan, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan reports.
It is worth noting that this initiative was put forward by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon during the general debate of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly on September 24, 2024.
The resolution, adopted unanimously by the UN General Assembly, has become an important precedent for the formation of a global consensus on the ethical and safe use of AI, including the development of self-regulatory mechanisms and responsible governance of AI technologies at the regional and national levels.
The resolution also outlines key mechanisms for using artificial intelligence technologies to ensure sustainable development in Central Asia. One of the key mechanisms proposed is the establishment of a Regional Artificial Intelligence Center in Dushanbe to coordinate joint AI implementation programs in Central Asia.
Implementing these approaches promotes the creation of safe, secure and trustworthy AI systems – striking a balance between regulation, innovation and internal self-monitoring mechanisms, setting a precedent for other regions of the world.
The activities of the Regional AI Centre in Dushanbe will accelerate the implementation of key AI initiatives in Central Asia, including:
– promotion of joint programs for training AI specialists and support for AI startups between technology parks located in the region;
– establishing research projects in AI between universities, researchers and AI laboratories in the region;
– formation of a common network of data centers to increase the availability of computing power in AI between countries in the region;
– harmonisation of national AI monitoring initiatives with the aim of introducing common principles of coordinated, responsible and self-regulated AI governance in Central Asia;
– promoting global AI initiatives with international partners and organizations.
Undoubtedly, the adoption of the mentioned resolution emphasizes the important role of the Republic of Tajikistan in matters of artificial intelligence on the world stage, noting the historical significance of the creative policy of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon.
