On Sunday morning, Russian attack drones attacked the city of Kharkov. The strikes resulted in destruction in several areas of the city, including a drone hitting a residential high-rise building and civilian infrastructure. The number of casualties continues to grow, including children.
The scale of destruction and the number of victims
According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES), the attack hit the Shevchenkivskyi and Slobidskyi districts of Kharkiv. As of 8:50 a.m., the number of victims had increased to 27 people , several of whom were minors.
Earlier, as of 7:55, 20 victims were reported, including three children . In the Shevchenkivskyi district, 12 people were injured, in Slobodskoy – 8.
According to preliminary data, a drone hit a 9-story residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district . A fire broke out on the 8th floor, the area of the fire was about 70 square meters. As a result of the strike, at least 6 people were injured, including 2 children .
In the Slobodskoy district , a fire hit the territory of a kindergarten and a shopping facility . An outbuilding and a car caught fire there. The total area of the fire was about 10 square meters. Two injured people were reported from this district.
At 5:30 a.m., Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov reported that the city had been attacked by two Shahed drones. He warned residents of possible new explosions and enemy drones flying over the city. Later, the Chairman of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration Oleg Sinegubov clarified that the strike had been carried out specifically on civilian infrastructure. In addition to residential buildings, a kindergarten building was damaged.
Consequences
According to updated information, fires and destruction have engulfed both residential areas and educational institutions. Rescuers continue to eliminate the consequences and evacuate people from damaged buildings. Doctors are providing assistance to the wounded, some of whom are hospitalized in serious condition.
Context
This is not the first large-scale drone attack on Kharkiv in recent weeks. Earlier, on July 4, Russia launched 539 kamikaze drones, missiles and imitators on Ukrainian territory, the main blow fell on Kiev and the Kiev region. As a result, numerous destructions and fires were recorded.
Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Robert "Magyar" Brovdi stated that in the near future Russia may increase the number of launches of attack drones to 1,000 units per day , which poses a serious threat to civil security and critical infrastructure of the country.
Authorities are calling on citizens to remain vigilant, follow warning signals and not ignore emergency services instructions.
