As a result of heavy rain and a mudslide that occurred yesterday in the rural jamoat of Kosatarosh in the city of Penjikent, significant damage was caused to irrigation infrastructure and farmland. This was reported by the headquarters for emergency situations and civil defense at the local government.
According to the operational report, as a result of the flood and mudflow in the Khalifa Hasan Canal, which supplies water to over 3.5 thousand hectares of cultivated land and gardens, about 20 meters of the bank were washed away, and individual sections of the channel were covered with sand and gravel. Similar damage was recorded in the Farmetan Canal, where the water flow was partially blocked.
In addition, the disaster damaged about 80 hectares of rice, potato, corn and other crops belonging to peasant and private farms.
On the morning of June 16, a visiting meeting of the city emergency headquarters was held at the scene of the incident, chaired by the city mayor Abdukholik Kholikzoda with the participation of representatives of the Emergency Situations Committee and other relevant structures. A decision was made to assess the damage and begin restoration work as soon as possible.
The State Department of Land Reclamation and Irrigation of the Zarafshan River Basin has been instructed to clean the canals and dams using the Zarafshan JV’s own machinery and equipment. Work to restore the irrigation system has already begun.
