The State Security Service (SSS) of Uzbekistan has thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large consignment of opium from Tajikistan into the country. This was reported on Sunday by the SSS press center.
"During operational and investigative activities, officers of the Khorezm regional department of the State Security Service stopped a DAF truck driven by a 35-year-old resident of the Surkhandarya region," the report says. "During inspection, 49.599 kilograms of opium were found in a secret compartment in the luggage compartment."
According to the agency, the drug was imported into Uzbekistan from Tajikistan, after which it was planned to be sold in the Khorezm region.
A criminal case has been opened against the detainee and he has been placed in custody. Law enforcement agencies continue operational activities aimed at identifying and detaining possible accomplices.
