The oldest person on the planet, Brazilian nun Ina Canabarro Lucas, has died at the age of 116 years and 326 days, the BBC Russian Service reports.
According to the US-based Gerontology Research Group (GRG) and the LongeviQuest database, after Lucas's death, the title of supercentenarian passed to Ethel Caterham from Surrey, England, who turned 115 in August 2024.
Ina Canabarro Lucas became the world's oldest person in January after the death of Japanese woman Tomiko Itooka, also aged 116.
LongeviQuest reports that the nun, on her 110th birthday, received a blessing from Pope Francis, who died on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 and was buried last weekend.
Although Lucas herself claimed that her date of birth was May 27, 1908, according to documents she was born on June 8.
