A French court has found actor Gerard Depardieu guilty of sexual assault against two women who had made accusations against him, news agencies report. He has been given a suspended sentence of 18 months, the BBC reports.
The court hearing is still ongoing. Depardieu has not admitted guilt.
The actor is accused of sexually assaulting two women while filming the 2021 movie Green Shutters.
This is the first case against Depardieu to go to court, although around 20 women have accused him of inappropriate behavior.
Prosecutors asked for 76-year-old Depardieu to be given a suspended sentence of one and a half years in prison and a fine of 20,000 euros.
One of the plaintiffs, production designer Amelie K., who testified in court, said the actor touched her body while holding her between his legs during the filming of a movie in 2021. At the same time, he made explicit sexual remarks.
Depardieu denies it was violence, saying the rude comments he made were due to his bad mood.
