In Tajikistan, plans are to develop 2,820 hectares of new irrigated land and return 1,119 hectares of previously unused land to agricultural use by 2026. This was announced on July 9 at a press conference by the Agency for Land Reclamation and Irrigation under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, dedicated to the results of the first half of 2026.
The work is being carried out within the framework of the State Program for the Development of New Irrigated Lands and the Restoration of Lands Withdrawn from Agricultural Use for 2026–2030.
The program provides for the expansion of the area of irrigated land through the construction, restoration, and reconstruction of hydraulic structures.
According to the Agency, the need to increase agricultural land is related, among other things, to population growth and the need to provide the country's residents with high-quality food products.
At the same time, the authorities intend to prevent the further withdrawal of irrigated arable land from agricultural use.
In the first half of 2026, work continued in cities and regions of the country to develop 416 hectares of new land.
In addition, 344 hectares of land previously withdrawn from agricultural use are being restored.
The Agency reported that work is ongoing, and additional information on the program's progress will be provided in due course.
The development of irrigated agriculture remains one of the key areas of work in Tajikistan’s land reclamation system.
In 2026, one of the Agency's main tasks in the second half of the year will be ensuring a stable supply of irrigation water to water users.
The agency also plans to continue work on developing 2,820 hectares of new land, restoring 1,119 hectares of unused agricultural land, and improving the melioration status of 13,632 hectares of irrigated arable land.
At the same time, coastal protection works will continue, aimed at preventing water-related natural disasters and protecting populated areas and economic facilities.
