Tajik President Emomali Rahmon emphasized the importance of strengthening transboundary cooperation on water resources and emphasized the need to further develop trust, partnership, and constructive dialogue between Central Asian countries on addressing water issues.
Speaking at the Fourth International High-Level Conference on the International Decade for Action, "Water for Sustainable Development, 2018–2028," the head of state noted that Tajikistan views the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea as an important regional platform for discussing and addressing a range of water issues in the interests of sustainable development.
In this context, Emomali Rahmon stated the need to create an Interstate Energy Commission of Central Asia within the framework of the fund.
The President of Tajikistan also emphasized that the international community must now begin to consider developing a global water agenda beyond 2030. He stated that further steps should build on the results of the International Decade for Action, "Water for Sustainable Development," the Water Agenda for Action, and the experience of the Dushanbe Water Process, and be aimed at addressing increasingly pressing water issues.
The head of state recalled that in recent years, the International Decade for Action and the Water Agenda have created a solid foundation for addressing water resources issues. However, despite these achievements, the global community still faces significant challenges in overcoming existing problems.
According to Emomali Rahmon, the need for a new phase of global cooperation in the water sector is urgent. In this regard, Tajikistan proposed the creation of the Dushanbe Framework for Water Issues.
As the President noted, this program could help strengthen existing processes in the water sector and create a favorable basis for coordinating and uniting international efforts to achieve practical results.
At the end of his speech, Emomali Rahmon announced the establishment of the International Prize of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan in the field of water resources. He stated that the prize aims to develop and strengthen water diplomacy and unite the efforts of the global community for a sustainable and secure future.
It was emphasized that the new international award is intended to recognize outstanding contributions to the development of international cooperation, scientific research, sustainable water policy, and the promotion of effective solutions to global water problems.
The head of state's proposal was met with prolonged applause from forum participants, demonstrating the support of those present for the initiative.
