Russia – the new Eldorado: Why Tajik girls go there to earn money

Education and career prospects for young people have always been a top priority in Tajikistan. In recent months, all these countries have increasingly discussed new challenges for college and university graduates: many young people are interested not only in finding a job but also in gaining international experience, mastering modern professions, and becoming competitive in a dynamic labor market.

Stories are increasingly being heard about Tajik students and graduates choosing professional development programs in other CIS countries, primarily Russia.

Why Russia?

The choice of Russia by Central Asian youth is explained by several compelling reasons:

No language barrier. In most CIS countries, Russian is either a second official language or widely used in everyday life. For young women and men, this means they don't have to spend years learning a new language to study, work, and make friends. This significantly eases adaptation compared to moving to Europe, the US, or Asia.

Cultural and mental affinity. Similar cultural codes, familiar films, music, literature, and humor create a sense of "home." The culture shock of moving to Russia is minimal compared to countries where everything—from mentality to national traditions—can be radically different.

Geographic proximity and transportation accessibility. Getting to Russia from Central Asia is much easier and cheaper than to Europe or the United States. This allows you to maintain close ties with family and visit home when needed.

Simplified migration procedures. Citizens of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan enjoy very lenient employment and registration rules, and obtaining a temporary residence permit and Russian citizenship is significantly simpler and faster.

The scale of opportunities. Russia's economy is the largest in the post-Soviet space. This means more large companies, startups, modern manufacturing facilities, and projects in engineering, science, IT, service, and media. For young women, this offers a real chance to realize their potential in a prestigious field and maximize their potential.

Alabuga Start – a new incentive for young people

One such case is the "Alabuga Start" program in the Republic of Tatarstan, which annually attracts dozens of young people from various regions, including Kazakhstan. A case in point is the story of Veronika , a program participant born in the village of Ust-Talovka in eastern Kazakhstan. Her journey is a clear example of how such opportunities can be used for personal and professional growth.

" I've dreamed of becoming a singer since childhood ," says Veronika. " After moving with my family first to the Altai Krai and then to Barnaul, I realized firsthand that getting a theater education without financial support is very difficult. That's why I accepted the offer to join the Alabuga Start program in Tatarstan without hesitation. It was my chance to become independent, save up for my dream, and forge my own path."

The opportunity to work in the service and hospitality industry, access to real business skills, support from mentors, and a close-knit team of participants became a launching pad for Veronica's future success.

Today, she's not only building a career and supporting herself and her family: Veronika is actively saving for her studies at a Moscow theater school. For her, like hundreds of other program participants, "Alabuga Start" offers not just a job but also tremendous skill development.

During her time working in the Service and Hospitality department, she developed a variety of useful skills: she mastered team management, became a mentor to young professionals, streamlined her communications, learned to communicate effectively, and developed leadership qualities.

" I'm a chaotic person by nature, but the program taught me how to structure my day and stick to deadlines. I learned how to find a way out of the most critical situations — something that will be very useful in the future. 'Alabuga Start' taught me a lot, " she notes.

The team's supportive atmosphere played a special role for Veronica: here she found true friends and became a mentor to newcomers.

" I found not only like-minded people but also true friends. I'm happy to share my experience with new girls who join the program , " she says.

Adaptation in Tatarstan is easy and sincere: the girls note the comfortable accommodations, the rich cultural life, the many new acquaintances, the respectful attitude, and genuine female support within the program. Participants share that joint trips to interesting places in the region, museum visits, learning about traditions, and connecting with each other make their experience in Russia unforgettable.

One of the most memorable moments was the visit of her parents and friends to Tatarstan for her birthday:

" When my family came for my birthday, I showed them around the city, the hostel, the work areas, and introduced them to the girls from the program. It was like a trip for the family—everyone saw that it's truly safe, interesting, and promising here, " Veronica shares .

The most interesting thing about this story, Veronica emphasizes, is that the friends liked Tatarstan so much that they decided to apply for the Alabuga Start program and come to work.

“ They said, ‘If you can do it , then we can too!’ It’s very motivating, because your personal experience can really change someone’s life, ” the girl is confident.

Polina and Anastasia (Veronica's friends) chose one of the most popular areas of the program – "Catering".

Alabuga Start currently offers seven career paths: Catering, Service and Hospitality, Finishing Work, Logistics, Installation Work, Production Operator, and Motor Transport Shop (Drivers). Women independently choose their future profession when applying on the program website.

Alabuga provides flights to Tatarstan, discounted accommodations in corporate hostels, and transportation to the workplace. Monthly income starts at $860. Participants are also offered health insurance and clear career prospects: they receive on-the-job training and the opportunity to advance their career every six months.

Among other things, "Alabuga Start" offers young women a unique opportunity to experience Russia and its traditions. Participants not only immerse themselves in the professional environment but also visit museums, explore the region's major cities, and learn about Russia's history, culture, and landmarks. This allows them to broaden their horizons, make new connections, and gain a deeper understanding of local life.

After graduating from Alabuga Start, the girls receive certificates of professional training. Each then decides for themselves whether to stay at Alabuga, pursue an education at Alabuga Polytechnic or another Russian educational institution, or return home and use their experience to develop their own business.

Russia is a country of opportunity

Veronica's story is a shining example of how taking the next step toward new opportunities can not only change your destiny but also inspire others. In finding her path, she braved the challenge of starting from scratch in an unfamiliar region, supported her loved ones, learned to be independent, and found a true professional community for women. Thanks to the "Alabuga Start" program, she turned her dream into a workable plan, gained financial support, confidence in the future, and—most importantly—self-confidence.

Today, her example is more powerful than any advertising slogan—Russia is truly becoming a land of opportunity for young people from the CIS. New faces are now appearing at Alabuga, and the success story of one young woman is marking the beginning of a major movement forward for an entire generation.
