The European Union expects to unblock the €90 billion financial aid package for Ukraine soon. This was announced by European Commissioner for the Economy Valdis Dombrovskis at a briefing in Brussels on April 21.
According to him, a decision could be made in the coming days or weeks, and the first tranche is expected by the end of May or early June. Dombrovskis noted that there are currently no longer any obstacles to implementing this mechanism, but the exact timeframe has not yet been determined.
He emphasized that support for Ukraine is provided in two directions – military and financial – and both processes are progressing in parallel.
The European Commissioner also stated that Ukraine is currently experiencing no liquidity problems and has sufficient financial resources to last at least until the end of May. He added that the country's current needs are met through assistance from international partners.
In particular, this concerns support from the G7 countries, the International Monetary Fund, and a number of countries outside the European Union, including Norway.
Furthermore, Dombrovskis confirmed that payments under the ERA mechanism, which is financed by revenues from frozen Russian assets, have been flowing to Ukraine on a regular basis since the beginning of 2026.
Brussels expects that, after all procedures are completed, Ukraine's financing will become more stable and predictable in the second half of the year.
The European Commissioner noted that, despite the availability of funds for the current year, the main problem could arise in 2027, since the existing aid package covers only part of Ukraine's needs.
