The Economic Council of the Commonwealth of Independent States approved key areas of cooperation among member states in the management of radioactive waste, spent nuclear fuel, and the decommissioning of nuclear and radiation hazardous facilities through 2030. This was reported by the press service of the CIS Executive Committee.
According to the report, the draft document was developed by TVEL, the management company of Rosatom's fuel division. The company also serves as the CIS's primary organization for the management of spent nuclear fuel, radioactive waste, and the decommissioning of nuclear and radiation hazardous facilities.
Key areas of cooperation include legislative harmonization, infrastructure development, nuclear and radiation safety, scientific and technological development, personnel training, international cooperation, the implementation of economic mechanisms, and consideration of socio-environmental aspects.
The press service noted that the document places particular emphasis on the exchange of advanced technologies, joint research, and attracting investment.
The base organization will coordinate the practical implementation of the agreements reached, facilitating the formation of unified approaches, the harmonization of requirements, and the development of standard solutions.
Eduard Nikitin, Director of Decommissioning of Nuclear and Radiation-Hazardous Facilities and Radioactive Waste Management at TVEL JSC, stated that international cooperation in the nuclear industry concerns not only production projects but also environmental issues and sustainable development of territories.
According to him, joint work with colleagues from CIS countries culminated in the signing of an official document at the interstate level. Implementation of the approved guidelines will improve the safety of irradiated fuel and waste management, reduce the infrastructural and financial risks of decommissioning nuclear legacy sites, strengthen cooperation between relevant organizations, and attract additional investment and advanced technologies to CIS countries.
He also emphasized that the implementation of such initiatives will contribute to increasing trust in nuclear energy and industry.
