US President Donald Trump told his aides that he is prepared to end military operations against Iran even if the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing White House officials.
They said Trump had concluded that Washington must achieve its core goals of containing Iran's navy and missile stockpiles and curtailing ongoing military actions, while simultaneously applying diplomatic pressure on Tehran to resume free trade.
The publication's sources stated that if the effort fails, Washington will insist that its allies in Europe and the Persian Gulf take the initiative to open the Strait of Hormuz.
