Persian Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Qatar, have strongly warned the United States against attempts to change the Iranian regime and against attacks on Tehran, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing officials from the three countries.
According to the publication, the authorities of Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Qatar told US President Donald Trump that an attempt to overthrow the Iranian regime could shake global oil markets and harm the US economy. "Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman are most concerned about the consequences on their own soil," the publication notes.
Earlier on January 13, the US President called on Iranian citizens and Washington's allies to leave Iran. Donald Trump also called on protesters in Iran to seize government buildings and promised Washington's support. The US President announced the cancellation of all meetings with Iranian officials.
Protests in Iran began on December 28 amid a sharp decline in the national currency. The protests included clashes with police, attacks on government buildings, and internet restrictions across the country.
Donald Trump previously stated that Washington was prepared to intervene if Iranian authorities resorted to force against protesters. Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei called on the US president to mind his own country's affairs. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi noted that the unrest was provoked by foreign elements, but the situation is currently under control. The Iranian Security Council accused the US and Israel of orchestrating the protests.
