Military integration within the Commonwealth of Independent States is developing in all key areas, CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev said in an interview with RIA Novosti on January 9, 2026.
"Integration processes in the military sector are developing in all key areas—from planning to the conduct of specific combat operations during exercises, joint operational and combat training events, comprehensive exercises, and training sessions," he said.
The Secretary-General noted that the main goals of military cooperation among CIS states in the medium term are to coordinate joint efforts in priority areas that contribute to strengthening national armed forces and the secure development of the Commonwealth.
"The concept for military cooperation until 2030 calls for a qualitative improvement in the mechanisms for creating and developing joint (combined) military systems. Specifically, it is planned to ensure the development of a unified air defense system, a joint communications system, a unified system for monitoring and assessing the radiation, chemical, and biological situation, a unified radar identification system, and a unified military geoinformation system for the armed forces," said Sergei Lebedev.
The CIS Secretary General emphasized that the coordination of joint efforts by Commonwealth states is aimed at strengthening national armed forces and the secure development of the international organization.
