Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy detailed the results of his talks with US President Donald Trump, which took place at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. He stated that the two sides reached fundamental agreements on security guarantees for Ukraine, the country's post-war reconstruction, and further steps to resolve the conflict with Russia.
As Zelenskyy announced on December 29, the United States confirmed its readiness to provide Ukraine with long-term security guarantees. These agreements relate to agreements previously developed by the two countries' technical and negotiating teams. According to the Ukrainian president, Donald Trump reaffirmed all key provisions of these agreements and stated his intention to submit them to the US Congress for consideration.
"President Trump confirmed all the details we had previously worked out, including security guarantees. These agreements will be submitted to a vote in the US Congress. This is a very strong and important decision," Zelenskyy wrote.
Economic Recovery and the Role of American Business. Particular attention was paid during the talks to Ukraine's economic recovery after the war. Zelenskyy noted that the United States is ready to actively participate in this process. Specifically, the entry of American companies into the Ukrainian market under special conditions aimed at accelerating the development of the country's infrastructure and economy was discussed.
In addition, the parties agreed to begin work on a free trade agreement between Ukraine and the United States, which, according to Kyiv, should become one of the key instruments of long-term economic support.
Security guarantees for 15 years and possible extension
Following the meeting, Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine and the United States had agreed on security guarantees for 15 years, with the possibility of subsequent extension. However, the Ukrainian president reiterated that Kyiv insists on a longer term. "We would very much like to consider the possibility of guarantees for 30, 40, or even 50 years. This would be a historic decision by President Trump," Zelenskyy wrote, adding that the American side had taken this proposal under consideration.
Next steps to end the war
During the talks, the two leaders also discussed the next steps to end the war in Ukraine. A meeting of American and European national security advisers is planned for the coming days. According to Zelenskyy, this meeting could take place in Ukraine.
Once all the necessary documents are prepared, a meeting of European leaders with Ukraine in an expanded format is expected. Only then will preparations begin for a separate meeting involving Donald Trump and European leaders.
"We are all committed to having these meetings take place as early as January. If the process develops step by step, a meeting—in one format or another—with the Russian side is possible after that," Zelensky noted.
The peace plan and the referendum question
Speaking about a possible peace settlement, the Ukrainian president emphasized that approval of the 20-point peace plan would require a national referendum. However, he stated that this would require at least a 60-day ceasefire. "Russia does not agree to a ceasefire for the period required to hold a referendum. That's about 60 days. This is a very complex issue, because Russia continues to exert pressure—with missile strikes, artillery, and other means," Zelenskyy wrote.
The Ukrainian president emphasized that Kyiv continues to seek a ceasefire as a necessary condition for launching the political process and implementing peace initiatives.
