The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution affirming the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state of Palestine. This was announced following the regular UN General Assembly meeting held in New York.
164 UN member states voted in favor of the resolution. Eight countries voted against, and nine abstained.
Among the countries that voted against the document were Israel and the United States, as well as Argentina, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea and Paraguay.

The draft resolution, entitled "The Right of the Palestinian People to Self-Determination," was prepared by seven states, including the Russian Federation and Norway. The document affirms the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and also affirms the right of all states in the Middle East to secure and peaceful coexistence within internationally recognized borders.
It is noted that all UN General Assembly resolutions are declarative in nature and do not provide for a mandatory implementation mechanism or legal consequences in the event of non-compliance.
The last time a similar resolution was considered by the UN General Assembly was just over a year ago, in mid-November 2024. At that time, a document with identical wording was supported by 170 states, with six countries voting against—Israel, the United States, Argentina, Micronesia, Nauru, and Paraguay—and nine states abstaining.
Such votes in the UN General Assembly are held regularly and typically yield similar results. Meanwhile, Israel, with the support of the United States, continues to ignore the adopted General Assembly resolutions.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is currently expanding its presence in the West Bank, one of the two parts of the partially recognized State of Palestine. The West Bank is divided into three sectors, two of which, according to various estimates, are either fully or partially under Israeli control.
The Gaza Strip, according to available information, is in a state close to complete occupation. At the same time, as part of previously reached ceasefire agreements with Hamas, Israeli troops have withdrawn to the demarcation line, remaining within the enclave and not conducting offensive operations. However, Israeli military strikes, attributed to provocations by Palestinian armed groups, continue.
