Embassy staff, representatives of the Ukrainian community, and the rector and congregation of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church lit candles and prayed for the repose of the victims of the genocide of the Ukrainian people perpetrated by the Soviet authorities.
Ukrainian Ambassador Valeriy Evdokimov noted that modern Russia's leadership is once again attempting to use famine as a weapon—to blockade Ukraine in order to destroy its economy and condemn millions of people in other countries who depend on Ukrainian grain supplies to the torments of hunger.
Ninety years ago, the Soviet regime managed to suppress, but not destroy, Ukrainians' aspirations for freedom through starvation. Russia's current aggression against Ukraine, on the contrary, has only heightened Ukrainians' historical memory and the global perception of Moscow's crimes against enslaved peoples in historical perspective.
